March 16, 2020
**Update to the update**
We want to make sure you know that we offer distance consults for herbs. If you are unable to come in because of symptoms or exposure (see below) but would like an herbal formula, let us know and we will schedule you for an herbal consult, or you can do so here:

We ask for our same 24-hour notice (as possible) if you need to reschedule so we can get to those needing herbal consultations as soon as possible.

Bear in mind that in addition to respiratory issues, flu symptoms etc, herbal formulas are also effective for menstrual pain and disorders, headaches/migraines, digestive disorders, anxiety and so on.

If you have any questions or concerns you can give us a call at 859.533.0914 or email

Dear Patients,

As you may have heard, Kentucky’s first diagnosed coronavirus (COVID-19) patient is being treated here in Lexington with additional people being tested daily. This is our response.

Clinic Policies
As we work in cooperation to contain the spread of the virus, we ask that you please call and reschedule your appointment if any of the following apply to you:

  • Fever
  • Cough
  • Shortness of Breath/Difficulty Breathing
  • Recent travel (within 2 weeks) to China, Iran, Italy, Japan, South Korea
  • Exposure within the last 2 weeks to someone to whom the above applies
  • Recent contact by yourself or with family/friends who work or have visited a hospital where the virus is being treated and contained.

If these do apply to you, we ask in agreement with KY CHFS that you stay home and call your doctor, your local health department, or the COVID-19 hotline at 1-800-722-5725. Of course if your symptoms are severe or would normally cause you to seek medical care, please do so right away.

If the above does not apply to you, we are happy to see you in the clinic. Please follow posted instructions on hand washing/sanitization upon entry, and know that we are taking extra measures of prevention as well, in accordance with CCAOM and ASA guidelines.

Coronavirus and Chinese Medicine
These precautions are primarily in place to protect the immunocompromised of our community, as well as to encourage those who are ill to seek appropriate care and diagnosis. There is a place for Traditional Chinese Medicine in the treatment of disease, even new ones such as COVID-19. Recent reports from China, where COVID-19 was first identified, show that patients who receive both Western and Traditional care (including herbal formulas alongside prescription medications) recover better and faster than those who do not.

With that in mind, if you need to reschedule your appointment for any of the reasons listed above, or for reasons related to quarantine, let us know when you call in that you would like to have an herbal consult instead, which we can do by phone and have the appropriate formula sent directly to you. If you are not on the schedule but would like to start an herbal supplement to help with your immunity (and have no other complaints), please email us at for quickest availability.

Reports from our colleagues on the front lines in Wuhan suggest that COVID-19 is what we consider a damp pathogen. One way to make your body less hospitable to type of virus is to

  • Avoid foods that encourage dampness within the body such as dairy, fried foods, sugary foods
  • Make it easy for your body to build immunity with warm cooked foods such as soups, roasted vegetables, and ginger tea daily.

The EPA has released a list of cleaning agents that are capable of disinfecting surfaces from COVID-19. Along with avoiding sick people as much as as possible, building your immunity and regular cleaning of surfaces such as doorknobs, car interiors, stair rails, faucets, etc., frequent and thorough hand washing is necessary, as well as keeping your hands away from your face which would allow entry of the pathogen into your mucus membranes (nose, eyes, mouth…) where it can proliferate.

Coronavirus, so-called for its corona-like shape, is an umbrella term that includes diagnoses ranging in severity from the common cold all the way through SARS. COVID-19 is a “novel” coronavirus, which means it had not previously been identified in humans, so treatment is being developed as people move through the stages of illness. It is not necessary to panic. It is only necessary to do what you can to be healthy, to be mindful of how you are feeling and respond appropriately, and to remember that we belong to each other and through simple measures can avoid spreading illness among the more vulnerable members of our community.

Thank you for your understanding and cooperation.
