In Chinese medicine we don’t seek the easy or fast path… although it is nice when you have a 1-needle wonder case! We seek continual, gradual effort through transformation and becoming better people. This takes time, effort, patience, and stick-to-it-tiveness. This last one is difficult, often because of preconceived expectations, or because of life’s challenges, bills, spouses, kids, jobs, time limits, etc. You start off with a vision for yourself and after a few sessions life starts to hammer at you and get in the way.
That’s why the concepts of Adornment and Nurturing the Small are so important. Adorning to what is right, never faltering, never giving up. To give up is to give up on your own body or mind, yourself! Then there is nurturing small things, and making improvements little by little until one day you’ve heaped up a large amount.
Of course, we want to break through many things and get to the Power of the Great, but that’s not always where you can start, even if you are red hot with inspiration. Rely, instead, on “perspiration” because that’s where most patients are. They realized they needed a change either in the middle of nowhere, or well after they should have started. That means “make up ground.” And that means, hard work. The good news is, outside of a few pricks and some cash, it’s actually not hard, and can be quite fun. The endorphins relax you and you get away from life for a bit. Also you get to talk to 2 people who really care about what you are going through. So it isn’t all work and no play.
Consider the benefits, and the extremely low risk, and the low cost (as compared to illness later), and you’ll realize what a great deal acupuncture really is. Try it. Stick with it. Change your life and that of those around you. Adorn to what is right. Never falter. Expect little and receive much. That’s the name of the game, and it happens to be the Changes we are in right now. Whatever else happens in the crazy world, there is always the power of transformation in the moment and today. That’s why they call it the “present.”
